There is and endless number of ways to decorate your home. While every style comes with its own set of rules, there are a few tips you can always keep in mind, regardless of what vibe you’re going for when decorating your home.
With these home decor tips, you can step up your decorating skills and make your house stand out to visitors. Without further ado, let’s go to tip number one.
Less Is More
You want to make your room look as beautiful and interesting as possible. It only makes sense that you’ll want to add as many beautiful and interesting elements to eat as you can. However, you must resist the impulse to add more and more stuff to your designs.
There are two big reasons why less is more in home decor. The first being that it’s simply impractical to live in a room that’s too crowded. You’ll want space to breath and to maneuver, and too much furniture will be an impediment to that.
The second reason is more of an aesthetic one. Visual clutter can become confusing and reduce the impact of otherwise appealing decoration. Whenever you’re considering placing a new accessory, ask yourself whether it fits perfectly with the style you’re going for and whether it makes a positive impact that justifies the extra complexity brought on by adding a new piece.
Be Original
This may seem like a generic piece of advice, but it’s so often neglected. It’s good to have a style in mind, but if you simply pick one and follow all of its cliches to a tee, your home will seem boring and uninspiring. Instead, go for something more unique. Maybe try and subtly merge two styles, or pick a slightly unusual color scheme for the style your going for, or simply add a few unexpected elements to an otherwise obvious decor.
Design An Experience
When decorating your home, you must think carefully about the experience a visitor gets exploring it. For instance, it is important that you have a focal point in each room – a central piece which stands out and is supported by others. This focal point will anchor the room and be the center of attention, and it’s important that it can be seen from other areas in the home, too.
In most cases, you’ll want your focal point (along with your other best pieces of decoration) to be at eye-level at around 57 inches. This way most people will see it immediately when they pass by and you won’t risk having your favorite piece go unnoticed.
Remember that the home decor tips above are just suggestions. You can always ignore them if you want to do something original and break a few rules. Just make sure you understand the guidelines and the reasons behind them so that when you make something different, you’ll circumvent them in a tasteful, interesting way.
