The Basics Of Vintage Home Decor Style

By M Johnson

The vintage home screams comfort and uniqueness. It combines elements of past eras to create something that is new and different. Vintage home decor is comfortable and romantic and you get to focus on pieces that you enjoy rather than follow a set of rules. You can choose pieces from different eras or decorate your house in just one era. The choice is yours.

Keep the colors light and low-key. Think pale blue, lilac or gray. Keep the colors of the walls calm so you can focus on the contents of the home.

Think about your favorite eras and how you want to reproduce them in your home. Some of the more common eras that are used in vintage home styling are the 1950’s and the 1970’s. You can stick with one era or incorporate two or more eras in your design plans.

When you are buying furniture and accessories try to stick with originals when you can. It is easy to find vintage items online, in antique stores, in thrift stores, and at flea markets. Sometimes you can’t find what you want or the price is too expensive so it is okay to buy reproduction pieces as needed. You might love the look of 1940’s refrigerators with their chrome trim and unique shape, but you don’t want an original that uses a lot of electricity and might not work reliably. In this case, a reproduction is going to be the right choice.

You can also create a vintage look with inexpensive pieces that you purchase from flea markets or thrift stores. You can add vintage paint effects to create the look of aged wood or metal and end up with a piece that is totally unique. Each piece of furniture should tell a story and when you work on the furniture yourself, it just means more.

The vintage home is a medley of different colors and textures. You can find different fabrics, textures, and materials like wood, stone, and ceramic in the vintage home. When you walk in your home you want to feel like you are going back in time or stepping into another world. Your home is going to have a romantic look with beautiful colors, soft lines, and interesting pieces that make you want to linger and make yourself comfortable.

Each room should have a lived-in look with exotic carpets over wood floors and plenty of plants. You should have plants in every room and you can use vintage baskets to place the pots in or buy Chinese planters that add more character to each plant. You also want to set out plenty of collectibles and accessories when you are using vintage home decor style. Show off your collection of vintage vases and vintage pottery. Vintage memorabilia also makes a great display.
